  • If you like seafood, then you’ll definitely like this delicious homemade fisherman soup. Whenever I’m craving seafood, this is soup that always comes to my mind because I can eat it with rice, yam,any swallow or eat it as it is. Fisherman is very popular among the Niger-Delta states of Nigeria, mainly the riverine communities. This delicious soup is made up of hot and spicy broth with varieties of seafood. It is similar to the Hungarian paprika based fisherman soup made with river fish. I used tomato and sweet peppers ,and palm oil for the bright colors cocoyam for thickener and mint leaves for the garnish.( uziza leaves is usually used for garnishing, but you can use any other green vegetable as substitute).

1 tablespoon palm oil

1 Roma tomato

4 sweet peppers

2 habanero pepper

2 cloves garlic

1 medium onion

1 handful mint leaves

2 stock cubes

salt to taste

Peel and cook cocoyam until tender, mash till you get a smooth paste.( some people don’t cook the cocoyam before mashing, whatever works for you is fine.)

blend the tomato, onion, garlic, and peppers together.

chopped the cooked shrimp into small bits.

wash the fish, crab, periwinkles and raw shrimp.

slice or shred the mint leaves.

Put a pot on fire over medium-high heat, add the crab, pepper mix, stock cubes.salt to taste, add 1-2 cups of water,Cover and cook for 2-3 minutes then add the fresh fish, raw shrimp and dry fish, cook for about 2 minutes.

add periwinkles cook for a minute or two, stir in the chopped shrimp, cook for a few minutes.

Add the Cocoyam Paste according to how thick you want the soup.add palm oil and stir properly.cook for another 2 minutes, reduce the heat, stir in the mint leaves and simmer for a few minute.turn off the heat and serve hot with a side dish,or eat as a main dish.
